Product Description
The aesthetic appearance of various objects is important to human beings. One measure of the quality of an object is its surface quality, which can be characterized with the concept of gloss. Nowadays measurement of the gloss is a routine off-line method in assessment of quality of product at various sectors of industry.

The book gives a fresh treatment on the concept of gloss. Theoretical description will be on more general basis of optical physics than in other sources. The text will give a modern treatise of machine vision based glossmeters and furnish the ideas how to measure and analyse gloss from complex-structured objects. Innovations of machine vision and gloss data analysis by embedded micro-controllers and microprocessors are trademarks that fill the gaps of older textbooks.

Key Features:

- modern treatment of gloss
- presents novel glossmeter based high technology
- completes principle of machine vision
- application in industrial environment
- emphasis on pedagogical presentation

From the Back Cover
The aim of this book is to give the present state of art in the field of gloss measurement. There are other books devoted to gloss but unfortunately they are already relatively old. Indeed, they do not give information how modern technology can help in many ways to get better understanding of gloss. The starting point is to provide general theoretical background, which is important in understanding the result of gloss measurement. The theory includes light interaction with ideal and rough surfaces. The concept of gloss will be generalized to complex surfaces, for instance, nanostructured and optically anisotropic surfaces. Devices that are important for gloss measurement are explained in details. These include, e.g., lasers and CCD-cameras, which are nowadays regularly utilized in machine vision systems at industrial environments for product monitoring and process control. The principles of traditional glossmeters will be described in one chapter. Different kind of machine vision systems for measurement of gloss will be reviewed, and thus the book fills the gap of the older textbooks. A hot topic is the presentation of a novel glossmeter that makes it possible to gain local and global gloss from complex structured, such as interior of tableware, and tiny objects. Applications of off- and on- line gloss measurement systems at different fields of industry are also outlined.
