Upon completion of the third trip around the Mathematical Circle
(Mathematical Circles Squared), I fully intended not to make any more
of these circuits. In the intervening five years, however, so many
of the mathematical brethren sent me favorite anecdotes that they
hoped would appear in a subsequent ramble, that I finally felt
compelled to go around just once more. Herewith is the result-
which I insist is my farewell to these pleasant wanderings.
Again I point out that many anecdotes cannot survive a careful
examination for veracity; they are to be regarded more as folklore
than as truth. Someone once insightfully defined an anecdote as "a
revealing account of an incident that never occurred in the life of
c. " some lamous person.
