Design and implementation of a temperature control system for a High Temperature PEM fuel cell

Some of the technical problems of PEM fuel cells may be overcome if the operating temperature is increased. Consequently, High Temperature PEM Fuel Cells (HTPEMFC) are recieving great interest as they may ease the difficulties caused by liquid water, they accept hidrogen with higer concentration of CO and they permit an efficient heat exchange that icreases the global efficiency in combined heat and power generation. However, some drawbacks arise with the HTPEMFC technology. One of the most important is the degradation, which in general is accelerated at high temperatures. The objective of this project is to design and implement a temperature control system applied to a HTPEMFC of the Fuel Cell Laboratory of the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial. The controller design will be based on dynamic models of the HTPEMFC that have been developed within the fuel cell research group of the Institute's Automatic Control Research Line.
