Abstract

The role of user-adaptive interfaces and interaction is widely recognized in the human – computer interaction (HCI) community to improve acceptance and naturalness in comparison with non-adaptive ones. However, when dealing with robots, the physical embodiment and dynamic co-presence in shared spaces introduce additional challenges that go beyond traditional HCI. To make interaction with robots socially acceptable, legible, and natural from the user’s point of view, robots must not only react to stimuli but also proactively engage through predictive and anticipatory reasoning mechanisms.
