En este proyecto se abordará el problema de la navegación de robots en entornos naturales sin modificar. No se supondrá ningún conocimiento previo del entorno en el que se va a llevar a cabo la tarea de navegación, es decir, deberá funcionar en entornos desconocidos de los que inicialmente no se disponga de ningún mapa. El robot deberá ser capaz de alcanzar su objetivo a partir únicamente de la información visual obtenida a través de las cámaras transportadas por él mismo, y no deberá depender del acceso a sistemas de posicionamiento externos, como GPS, si bien, en los casos en que estén disponibles, podrá recurrirse a la utilización de tales fuentes de información para facilitar la tarea de navegación.
En todo caso, el objetivo de la navegación estará definido de forma puramente visual, y será seleccionado por el usuario utilizando una interfaz que le permita presenciar las imágenes captadas por la cámara del robot. Una vez definido el objetivo, el robot deberá alcanzarlo de forma autónoma, utilizando como referencia balizas (landmarks) naturales extraídas de las imágenes captadas a lo largo de su evolución.
Para hacer posible la navegación en entornos naturales se utilizarán robots todo terreno con ruedas u orugas para entornos medianamente abruptos, y robots caminantes para entornos más difíciles. El sistema de navegación que se desarrollará será reconfigurable, de modo que podrá ser utilizado con cualquiera de los robots disponibles. Esto permitirá realizar la misma tarea de navegación con distintos robots, sistemas de visión, algoritmos de localización, etc., lo que permitirá llevar a cabo comparaciones entre ellos bajo condiciones equivalentes.
